2020 is the year no one will easily forget because of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Our lives have been heavily impacted in a way we couldn’t have imagined. By the end of April 2020, there were more than 3.3 million reported cases of people who tested positive of Coronavirus worldwide, and more than 233 thousand people lost their lives. This is something this world have never seen since Spanish Flu in 1918.

To curb the spread of this invisible and deadly disease, almost every country in the world had to enforce lockdown measures that saw everyone having to stay at home for their safety and others. This meant that economic activities had to be put on hold and governments incentivised those who were negatively impacted with stimulus packages that brought temporary financial relief. However, temporary suspension of economic activities has a greater impact on any country’s citizens than the government’s financial relief measures. There are a number of economic sectors that have been hit hard by the safety measures put in place against the spread of COVID-19 and it will be very difficult for them to recover anytime soon. I’m talking about travel and tourism, hospitality, sports and entertainment, manufacturing, just to name the few.

It is not a hidden reality that most people are experiencing financial challenges in one of the following ways:

1. No work no pay principle;

2. Retrenchment, and;

3. Business shut down.

This is a result of poor performance of various sectors due to the pandemic.

Now, how do you, as an individual, survive these trying times when your household income is negatively impacted without a warning? Were you ready for this unusual time of your life? We are stuck between a rock and hard place where we have to ensure our health and safety during lockdown, while on the other hand, we have to avoid losing our minds because of financial challenges that are imposed on us by these circumstances.

How do you survive without your monthly income because your business had to be closed to control the spread of Coronavirus? As a waiter or waitress at the restaurant, how are you coping when you are not receiving your usual monthly income and the tips you are used to from customers who appreciated your service?

As a waiter or waitress at the restaurant, how are you coping when you are not receiving your usual monthly income and the tips you are used to from customers who appreciated your service?

Are your emergency funds or support from your family and/or government enough for you to survive these trying times?

Do you even have any kind of financial support from anyone?

When do you think you will earn your normal income again?

What about those who depend on you financially?

Are they coping well and not adding financial stress on you?

I don’t know about you, but I find it very difficult to stay sane and positive when we are all affected by this COVID-19.

This pandemic has really forced us to evaluate our lives and assess if our daily activities are sufficient measures to survive life happenings. As much as this may seem unfair on us, and no one expected it, we have been challenged to review our economic activities to see if they can keep the lights on at our homes all the times. No one can really predict how long will this pandemic last, but looking at our general behaviour against measures required to defeat this disease, I say we must be prepared for even tougher times in the near future.

Amazingly, there are few individuals who are not feeling any financial pains caused by the COVID-19. In fact, there are individuals who, not only have enough money to handle any financial storm, their income is actually increasing every month. Just take a look at Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon. His wealth increased by $24 billion in April, while more than half of the world’s employed population is suffering from financial stress one way or another. INCREDIBLE.

If you are not one of those “lucky” individuals whose lives are still fabulous in these trying times, clearly there are things you don’t do or have that they do or possess. This means if you want to be like them, you have to think and act like them. Actually, this pandemic forces us to be and think different about how we generate our monthly income.

To improve your financial outlook and fulfil your financial obligations all the time, you must create or invest in a system that will generate income for you, regardless of what happens to you. If you are currently unable to earn much needed income because of COVID-19, it is clear that you have to venture in other ways that will guarantee your income every month. The unfortunate part about life is that it doesn’t care how bad your financial situation is. When it happens, it happens, ready or not.

Those who are able to handle life happenings, have created or invested in systems that help them to do so. Even though it may seem like life is not as unfair on them as it is on you, the truth is that, what happens, happens to everyone, good or bad. No one in this world is not affected by this pandemic. The only difference between those who seem not to be struggling during this time and those who are unable to get through the day is that, those who are not struggling have built a financial wall around themselves and their families to protect them from life happenings. Question is, have you built a financial wall that protects you from life happenings like COVID-19 pandemic? Do you have a system in place that takes care of your financial world, regardless of what happens to you? If not, what’s stopping you from doing so?

It’s time to take a look at yourself and be your own saviour. It’s time to assess your financial activities and see if they are enough to protect you from life happenings. Gone are those days where you could rely on others to protect you financially because the COVID-19 has proved that it has power to take anyone away from you at any time, and leave you in a financial catastrophe. So, act now against not having recurring income from your own resources.

If you do nothing, you get nothing. Unless you change the way you are, you will always have what you got, and experience the same things all the time. Don’t let yourself down by allowing fear, worry and anxiety to stop you from working on yourself.

Unlike a tree that can’t change its position, you were born with the power to change everything about yourself. Use that power to the best of your ability to live a better life.
